What is Telematics?

Telematics refers to the interaction between telecommunications and informatics. The word is a generic term for the integration of speech, data and image communications technology.

Telematics is applied in the area of traffic, for example. Drivers are assisted in finding their way by graphic illustrations and computer-generated speech instruction. This allows traffic jams and roadblocks to be avoided, before they are reached.

Numerous other applications are also imaginable, including continuous engine monitoring, and thereby timely warning of damage and defects.

In future, practically every device networked with a computer should be able to transmit data via GSM (mobile communications) or UMTS.
