Further development of the Vespucci POI editor

Vespucci is an app for Android mobile phones capable of mapping POIs and other OSM data.

Vespucci Version 0.6.2 was developed by Matthias Brandt in March 2009 as part of his dissertation. After completing his degree, he largely stopped working on the program. At the beginning of April 2010, other developers released Version 0.6.3. For details see
http://code.google.com/p/osmeditor4android/

ENAiKOON found the program so well structured that we decided to further extend its capabilities in collaboration with the developer and the community. Software development will be supervised by Marcus Wolschon, a well-known figure in the OSM community, and is being financed by ENAiKOON. See also http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User:MarcusWolschon

The development of Vespucci 0.8 is aimed at introducing users to recording OSM data who are not computer scientists, computer freaks or otherwise already trained in programming, data formats etc. We are thinking here of primary school classes, holidaymakers, hiking groups, pensioners and the like who are interested in their environment primarily as a hobby and not necessarily as a meaningful application of computer technology. This is a huge target group and worth bringing on board for the benefit of OSM.

Our proposal for further development of the application will be soon be published on www.enaikoon.com. Our initial focus will be on functions that can be used by mapping beginners and occasional mappers to contribute useful work to the OSM database without needing to invest too much time in learning. Later, we plan to develop useful functions for experienced mappers in Vespucci 0.6.3. Ideas, though, have yet to be collected.

We will be happy to receive any comments and suggestions for improving Vespucci.

In any case, the data collected with Vespucci will continue to be available under the community's usual OSM licence.
