Hendrik Zeider, a keen geography teacher at a primary school in Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg, had already successfully experimented with his 4th graders in collecting geodata with the aid of GPS devices and feeding it into Google Earth. He then asked ENAiKOON for support in acquiring technical equipment for further projects of a similar nature. We were able to win him over for the OpenStreetMap project and drew up an action plan with him.
During a project week at the school in June 2010, around 15 pupils of various ages will map a confined area of Berlin and then process the data they collect.
POIs and tracks will be recorded and the newly acquired data fed into OpenStreetMap and labelled.
On the one hand the children will be introduced to using new technologies, while on the other, their natural interest in their immediate environment will be encouraged. The project's organisation and execution will then be presented in the OpenStreetMap wiki to guide other teachers and pupils and encourage them to participate in the project.
ENAiKOON is supporting this project organisationally and financially by providing the hardware (GPS devices, mobile phones, cameras, PCs etc.) for 15 teams.
