What means Telematics?

Telematics is the combination of Telecommunication and Information Technology; the interaction with speech, data and pictures.

A possible application is, for instance, in the transportation sector. A vehicledriver is able to find the best possible way by using graphical presentation or voice-supported route planning and navigation software. In this way, delays due to traffic jam and/or road construction can be avoided.

Many other applications are possible, for ex. the continuous monitoring of an engine: you are warned immediately if any damage or defect occurs or is likely to occur.

In the future, practically any networked device will be able to transfer data via GSM (mobile technology) or UMTS.
